Not every heavy curtain absorbs sound well. This guide breaks down what actually matters — fabric weight, weave density, NRC ratings — and where acoustic curtain fabric makes a real difference in Malaysian projects.
We get this request almost weekly now. An architect or ID firm calls, asks for "soundproof curtain fabric," and expects a single product that will silence a room. It doesn't work that way. But the right acoustic curtain fabric — chosen carefully, installed properly — can reduce perceived noise by 5 to 12 decibels. That's enough to turn a distractingly loud space into a workable one.
Most suppliers won't tell you this, but a 300gsm polyester with a tight flat weave absorbs less sound than a 240gsm cotton with a loose textured surface. Weight matters, yes. But it's only one variable.
Sound absorption in curtain fabric depends on three things working together: mass, surface texture, and air permeability. Heavy fabric blocks airborne sound. Textured surfaces scatter sound waves instead of reflecting them back. And controlled air permeability lets mid-frequency sound pass into the fabric layers where it gets trapped and converted to heat. Tiny amounts of heat — nothing you'd notice — but that's literally how sound absorption works at the physics level.
NRC stands for Noise Reduction Coefficient. It's a single number from 0 to 1.00 that tells you how much sound a material absorbs. An NRC of 0 means total reflection — like a marble wall. An NRC of 1.00 means total absorption. Most acoustic curtain fabrics score between 0.40 and 0.80.
Here's the problem. Very few curtain fabric suppliers in Malaysia test or publish NRC data for their fabrics. They'll call something "acoustic" on the label without any test report to back it up. We've started requesting NRC test certificates from our European and Turkish mills specifically because architects keep asking for verified numbers. See the jump between standard dimout and velvet? That's why we often recommend velvet to clients who want acoustic properties but don't want to pay specialist pricing. A good 380gsm cotton-poly velvet at RM12–18 per metre gets you roughly 70% of the acoustic performance of a dedicated NRC-tested curtain at RM35–55 per metre.
Aim for 280gsm minimum. Below that, you're not getting meaningful acoustic benefit regardless of what the label says. The sweet spot for price-to-performance sits between 320gsm and 420gsm. Beyond 450gsm, you're paying more per metre but the absorption gains flatten out.
And density isn't the same as weight. A loosely woven 350gsm fabric full of air pockets can absorb more sound than a tightly woven 350gsm flat-face fabric. The air gaps within the weave act as damping chambers.
Natural fibres like cotton and linen absorb sound slightly better than polyester at the same weight. The irregular surface of natural fibres scatters sound waves more effectively. But polyester has advantages too — better dimensional stability, easier maintenance, and lower cost per metre. For commercial projects where budget matters, a polyester-cotton blend at 65/35 gives you a workable balance.
Wool is the gold standard. Wool fibres naturally absorb up to 30% of their weight in moisture, and that internal structure also traps sound extremely well. But wool curtain fabric at RM45–80 per metre prices it out of most Malaysian projects. We carry 3 wool-blend options from a Turkish mill if budget allows.
This is the factor most people miss. A triple-weave fabric with a foam or flocked middle layer will outperform a single-ply fabric of the same weight every time. The middle layer acts as a dedicated sound-trapping zone.
Textured weaves — chenille, boucle, jacquard with raised patterns — scatter sound at multiple angles instead of reflecting it straight back. Flat sateen weaves look beautiful but they're acoustically closer to a mirror than a sponge.
Here's a trade secret that your tukang langsir probably already knows intuitively. Fullness ratio matters enormously for acoustic performance. A curtain installed at 2x fullness (meaning 6 metres of fabric covering a 3-metre window) creates deep folds that trap and scatter sound far more effectively than the same fabric at 1.5x fullness.
Double layering works even better. A sheer or semi-sheer layer behind a heavy drape creates an air gap. That air gap is an acoustic buffer. We've seen ID firms in Bangsar specify a 80gsm voile plus a 350gsm blackout dimout combination, and the acoustic result is noticeably better than the heavy curtain alone.
The gap between layers should be at least 75mm. More is better, up to about 200mm.

Partition curtains and window treatments in coworking spaces. We've supplied 320cm-wide acoustic fabric to three fitout projects in KL Sentral this year — the wider width means fewer seam joints, which improves both look and acoustic continuity.
AV integrators pair our NRC-rated velvet with ceiling panels for mid-to-high frequency absorption. The curtain handles frequencies above 500Hz while rigid panels target lower ranges. We carry 118-inch width specifically for studio draping on curved tracks.
Condos along Jalan Klang Lama, LDP frontage in PJ, Federal Highway corridors — road noise is constant. A 380gsm acoustic curtain on a ceiling-mounted track with side returns can drop perceived noise by 8 to 10 dB. Enough to improve sleep quality noticeably.
Hotels in KLCC and Bukit Bintang use heavy velvet stage curtains not just for aesthetics but for speech clarity. Less echo means the PA system works better. We've supplied 450gsm flame-retardant velvet for ballroom installations where NRC and fire rating both matter.
University libraries and corporate quiet rooms where ambient noise needs damping. Fabric room dividers on track systems create flexible quiet zones without permanent construction. Cheaper than drywall, and reversible if the layout changes.

The best fabric in the world won't perform if it's hung poorly. Ceiling-mounted tracks beat wall-mounted brackets because they eliminate the gap at the top where sound leaks through. Side returns — where the curtain wraps around to the wall at each side — close off another common leakage path. And the curtain should touch the floor or even puddle slightly.
We've seen projects where an architect specified RM40/m acoustic fabric but the contractor installed it on a cheap wall bracket with 150mm gaps on both sides. Total waste. A RM15/m heavy polyester velvet on a properly sealed ceiling track would have performed better acoustically.
Ready stock acoustic curtain fabric in Malaysia: expect RM8–18 per metre for polyester and poly-blend options in 54-inch or 110-inch widths. NRC-certified specialist fabrics run RM28–55 per metre, mostly indent from Turkey, Belgium, and Germany. Lead time is typically 6 to 8 weeks for indent stock. During CNY season, add another 2 to 3 weeks because shipping from China ports slows down and even European shipments get caught in the congestion.

Stock tends to run low before Hari Raya and Chinese New Year. If you've got a project with a Q1 deadline, order your acoustic fabric by November to be safe.
Any commercial acoustic curtain installation should use fire-retardant fabric. Malaysia follows MS 1223 for textile flammability, and most commercial buildings require at minimum a Class 1 fire rating. All our acoustic fabrics for commercial projects are either inherently FR (the fibre itself is fire-resistant) or treated with a topical FR finish. Ask us which treatment the specific fabric has — inherent FR lasts longer and doesn't wash out, but treated FR costs less upfront.
Because it means selling you two fabrics instead of one expensive one. But honestly, a dual-layer setup often costs less and performs better. Take a 180gsm semi-sheer at RM5/m on the window side, then a 320gsm blackout at RM12/m on the room side, with a 100mm air gap between. Total cost: RM17/m. Performance: comparable to a single-layer specialist fabric at RM35/m. And you get light control flexibility as a bonus.
The only downside is the double track system, which adds maybe RM8–12 per running metre for hardware. Still cheaper overall.
