Velvet curtain fabric has been the go-to for high-end Malaysian interiors since before any of us were in the trade. Hotel lobbies in KLCC, penthouse units in Mont Kiara, private home theatres in Damansara Heights — the one fabric you see again and again is velvet. There is a reason for that.
Heavy drape. Superior light blockage. A surface that catches light and gives a room depth that flat fabrics simply cannot match.
At our warehouse along Jalan Klang Lama, we keep roughly 87 velvet colourways in ready stock across three main categories: Dutch velvet, crushed velvet, and Italian velvet. Most suppliers in the Jalan Ipoh fabric district carry maybe 15 to 20 colours at best, and you end up waiting 4 to 6 weeks for indent stock from China. We saw that gap years ago and decided to warehouse the full range locally. And it has paid off — our project clients can walk in Monday morning and have fabric on the tukang jahit's table by Wednesday.
Most suppliers won't tell you this, but not all velvet curtain fabric performs the same in a tropical climate. Cheap velvet made from 100% cotton pile will absorb moisture, develop mildew spots within 6 months, and lose its sheen. We exclusively stock polyester and poly-cotton blend velvets that handle Malaysian humidity without breaking down. Every roll we bring in has been tested for colour fastness (minimum Grade 4 on the grey scale) and mildew resistance.
Dutch Velvet — the classic. Dense, uniform pile at around 320 to 380 gsm. Feels substantial in your hand. This is what most ID firms specify for formal living rooms and master bedrooms in condos. Comes in 280cm width as standard, which means you can drape floor-to-ceiling without any horizontal seam on a standard 10-foot slab height. Price sits between RM8 and RM15 per metre depending on weight and finish.
Crushed Velvet — the textured option. Lighter at 220 to 280 gsm but with that distinctive crinkled surface that plays with light. Boutique hotels love it. We fitted crushed velvet curtains for a boutique property in Bangsar last year — 47 rooms, all in a deep burgundy. The ID specified crushed specifically because it hides minor wrinkles from daily handling by housekeeping staff. Smart choice. Available in 280cm and 320cm widths, priced between RM12 and RM22 per metre.
Italian Velvet — the premium tier. Softer hand feel, denser pile, richer colour saturation. We import this directly from mills in Como. It is priced higher at RM25 to RM45 per metre, and it comes in 140cm (54-inch) width, which means more panels per window. But the quality difference is visible from across the room. Best suited for showrooms, VIP suites, and high-end residential projects where the client's budget allows for it.

This comes up in almost every consultation. "Velvet in Malaysia? Won't it get mouldy?" Fair question.
Traditional velvet — pure cotton, pure silk — yes, those struggle in our climate. But we are not selling those. Every velvet roll in our stock is either 100% polyester or a poly-cotton blend (typically 80/20). These fibres do not absorb ambient moisture the way natural velvet does. We have supplied velvet drapery fabric to beachfront resorts in Langkawi and hillside bungalows in Cameron Highlands. Both extremes of humidity. Zero complaints after three-plus years.
The key is fibre content. Ask your pembekal what the composition is. If they cannot answer, walk away.
We also carry velvet with antimicrobial treatments for healthcare and hospitality applications. These meet the BS 5867 fire-retardant standard as well, which some hotel operators now require. Stock runs low on the FR-treated velvets before Raya season, so if you have a hotel refurbishment planned for Q4, place your indent by August at the latest.
Velvet is not marketed as a blackout curtain fabric, but in practice, a heavy Dutch velvet at 350 gsm blocks 92 to 96 percent of light. For a home theatre or master bedroom, that is usually sufficient. If you need true 100% blackout, we can line the velvet with our dedicated blackout lining — this gives you the luxurious front face with full darkness behind.
For hotel projects, this lining combination is standard. The guest sees velvet. The room gets total blackout. And the lining adds thermal insulation, which helps with aircon efficiency. We have seen clients reduce their chiller load by 8 to 12 percent after retrofitting lined velvet curtains in a 200-room tower.
Our MOQ for velvet fabric wholesale is 50 metres per colour. Order above 200 metres and we apply volume pricing — talk to our sales team for exact figures because it varies by velvet type. For mega projects (500+ metres), we can arrange direct mill orders with your custom colourway at no extra charge for the dyeing lot, provided lead time allows 8 to 10 weeks from order confirmation.
Container delays from Chinese ports have eased since early 2025, but lead times during CNY still stretch to 12 weeks. Plan accordingly. We keep our wholesale curtain fabric stock deep specifically so project contractors are not caught out by shipping unpredictability.
Walk-in purchases from our ready-stock range have no MOQ — you can buy 5 metres for a single window if that is all you need. Cutting charge of RM2 per cut applies for sub-bolt quantities.

Crushed velvet has an intentionally irregular, textured surface that catches light at different angles — popular for contemporary interiors and boutique hotels. Dutch velvet has a smooth, dense pile with a uniform sheen, the traditional choice for formal drapes in ballrooms and master bedrooms. Dutch velvet is also heavier at around 320 to 380 gsm versus 220 to 280 gsm for crushed velvet.
