GSM is the single number that tells you more about a curtain fabric than any marketing description ever will. This guide breaks down what fabric weight means in practice — for drape, light control, and getting the right material onto your client's windows.

What GSM actually means

Every curtain fabric buyer should understand GSM before placing a single order. It saves arguments, returns, and wasted money.

GSM stands for grams per square metre. Take a piece of fabric exactly one metre wide and one metre long, weigh it, and that number in grams is your GSM. Simple as that.

But that simple number tells you a lot. A 75 GSM voile behaves completely differently from a 310 GSM dimout or a 420 GSM stage velvet. GSM affects how the fabric hangs on a track, how much light gets through, how it feels between your fingers, and whether your tukang jahit will curse you for trying to sew it on a domestic machine.

Most suppliers in the kedai kain along Jalan Ipoh or the fabric district in Jalan Klang Lama can tell you the GSM if you ask. But many curtain buyers — especially newer contractors and ID firms — skip this step entirely. They order based on colour and price alone, then wonder why the finished curtain puddles on the floor instead of hanging straight, or why a "blackout" fabric still lets glow through at the edges.

Why GSM matters more than you think

Weight drives everything. A fabric at 85 GSM will billow in air-conditioning, which is fine for a sheer day curtain but disastrous if your client expected privacy. A fabric at 380 GSM will give gorgeous heavy folds for a velvet curtain in a Mont Kiara condo living room — but that same weight on a flimsy ceiling-mounted curtain track will pull the whole thing down within six months.

And here is something most suppliers will not tell you: GSM alone does not determine opacity. A tightly woven 180 GSM polyester with a white backing can block more light than a loosely woven 260 GSM cotton with no backing at all. Construction method, yarn density, and finishing treatments all play a role. But GSM remains the starting point for any informed fabric decision.

GSM versus momme, ounces, and other units

If you deal with imported fabrics, you might encounter other weight units. Silk uses momme (mm). American suppliers quote ounces per square yard (oz/yd²). Japanese mills sometimes list weight per running metre at a given width. For the Malaysian curtain trade, GSM is the universal standard. Every factory in China, every mill in Turkey, every warehouse along Jalan Klang Lama — GSM is the common language.

Quick conversions if you ever need them: 1 oz/yd² equals roughly 33.9 GSM. So a fabric listed as "8 oz" would be approximately 271 GSM. And 1 momme of silk equals about 4.3 GSM, meaning a 19mm silk is roughly 82 GSM.

How to use this chart in practice

When a client tells you they want "something heavy that drapes nicely," you are probably looking at the 220–320 GSM range. That covers most blackout curtain fabric and mid-range dimout options. If they say "airy and light," you are in the under-150 GSM territory — sheer or semi-sheer fabrics.

The trickiest zone is 200 to 350 GSM. This is where most curtain fabrics sit, and where the differences between two similarly weighted fabrics can be massive. A 260 GSM linen curtain fabric with natural slub texture hangs very differently from a 260 GSM polyester satin with smooth face. Same number on the spec sheet. Completely different result on the window.

The weight ranges your tukang jahit cares about

Your seamstress or curtain maker has practical limits. Most domestic sewing machines handle fabrics up to about 280 GSM comfortably. Above that, you need an industrial machine with a walking foot. A velvet at 420 GSM will jam a household Singer in two minutes flat.

Header tape and pinch-pleat hooks also have weight limits. Standard 3-inch pencil pleat tape is designed for fabrics up to roughly 250 GSM. For heavier fabrics, you need reinforced heading tape or sewn-in buckram. And the curtain track? A standard aluminium ceiling track rated for 8 kg per metre of track works fine for medium-weight fabrics at 280 cm width. But hang a 380 GSM velvet at full double-pleat fullness on that same track and you are asking for trouble.

Common GSM figures you will encounter

Here are real-world GSM values from fabrics we stock regularly. Not marketing ranges — actual tested weights from our warehouse:

Notice the width differences. Heavier decorative fabrics like velvet and chenille often come in 54-inch (137 cm) width rather than the 110-inch (280 cm) railroaded width used for sheers and standard curtain fabrics. That matters for costing — a 54" fabric needs seaming for wide windows, which adds labour cost per bidang.

Practical effects

How fabric weight affects curtain performance

Weight is not just a number. It changes how curtains look, function, and last in real Malaysian conditions.

Drape and fullness

Drape is the reason clients pay RM45 per metre for one fabric and reject another at RM12. And GSM is the first driver of drape quality.

Lightweight fabrics under 150 GSM create soft, fluid folds. They move with air-conditioning drafts and catch light beautifully. But they lack body. A 90 GSM voile on a wave-fold track looks elegant. That same 90 GSM voile on a pinch-pleat heading looks limp and sad.

Medium-weight fabrics in the 220–300 GSM sweet spot give you the best of both worlds: enough weight for structured pleats and clean vertical folds, but not so heavy that the curtain becomes a rigid slab. Most blackout and dimout curtain fabrics sit in this range for exactly this reason.

Heavy fabrics above 350 GSM create dramatic, luxurious folds with deep shadows between each pleat. Gorgeous in a Bangsar bungalow dining room. But the fullness ratio changes — you typically use 1.5x fullness for heavy fabrics versus 2x or 2.5x for lighter ones, which actually reduces your fabric consumption per window.

Light control and opacity

Here is the trade truth that confuses many buyers: weight and opacity are related but not the same thing.

A 240 GSM 3-pass coated blackout stops 99% of light. A loosely woven 280 GSM uncoated cotton lets 40% through. The coated fabric is lighter but blocks more light. So when a client says they want "heavy blackout," what they actually want is effective blackout — and that depends more on coating and weave density than raw GSM.

That said, within the same construction type, higher GSM generally means better light blocking. A 260 GSM dimout will block more light than a 195 GSM dimout of the same fibre and weave. Most suppliers along Jalan Klang Lama carry dimout fabrics between 190 and 280 GSM, and you can feel the difference in opacity just by holding them up to a window.

Durability and lifespan

Heavier fabrics last longer. Full stop. A 280 GSM polyester curtain in a KLCC serviced apartment will outlast a 130 GSM sheer by years, simply because there is more material to resist UV degradation, abrasion from daily opening and closing, and the general wear of tropical humidity.

For hotel projects, we recommend minimum 220 GSM for any night curtain that will be pulled daily. Below that, you are looking at replacements within 3–4 years instead of 6–8 years. The per-metre cost difference between a 195 GSM and a 260 GSM fabric is maybe RM3–5, but the lifespan difference is substantial.

Thermal and acoustic properties

Fabric weight directly affects thermal insulation. A 320 GSM triple-weave blackout creates a measurable thermal barrier at the window — reducing heat gain by up to 27% compared to a bare window, based on thermal testing data from fabric mills. In Malaysia, where air-conditioning is the biggest electricity cost in most commercial buildings, that matters.

Sound absorption follows a similar pattern. Heavier, denser fabrics absorb more sound energy. A 400 GSM velvet curtain in a shophouse meeting room on a busy Bangsar road makes a noticeable difference to interior noise levels. Lightweight sheers do virtually nothing for sound.

The mistake buyers make with stock availability

During peak season — typically March through May before Hari Raya, and again in October before year-end handovers — popular GSM ranges fly off the shelf. A 260 GSM linen-look dimout in ivory that was ready stock last week might suddenly need 6–8 weeks lead time from the mill.

If you are quoting for a project that will not install for 3 months, confirm stock levels and ask your pembekal to hold allocation. We can reserve fabric for confirmed orders at Artwork Fabrics, but we cannot guarantee walk-in availability during peak periods. Container delays from Chinese ports can add another 2–3 weeks on top of mill production time.

And one more thing — GSM can vary slightly between production batches. A fabric listed at 240 GSM might test at 233 or 248 on a different roll from the same mill. That is normal. A tolerance of plus or minus 5% is industry standard. If your project is extremely weight-sensitive (acoustic panels, for example), request a test cutting from the specific batch you will receive.
