Most curtain fabric looks the same on a sample card. The difference shows up 18 months later — when colours fade, hems sag, and your client calls to complain. This guide gives you the metrics that separate good fabric from the cheap stuff.
A roll of curtain fabric at RM8 per metre and another at RM22 per metre can look almost identical on the sample card. Same colour, same drape, same finish. But hang them side by side in a west-facing condo unit in Mont Kiara, and within 8 months the difference screams at you.
Cheap fabric fades. It pills. It shrinks after the first wash.
And then your client blames you — the tukang jahit, the curtain maker, or the interior designer who specified it. Not the fabric supplier who sold you a roll with zero test data and a big smile.
We see this cycle repeat itself every year at our Jalan Klang Lama showroom. A curtain contractor walks in, tells us they lost a client because their previous fabric — bought from some kedai kain near the Jalan Ipoh fabric district — started looking washed out before the defect period even ended. Now they want "the good stuff." But they don't actually know what makes fabric good. They just know the last one was bad.
This guide fixes that gap. We'll walk through the six quality metrics that actually matter for curtain fabric, with real numbers and test standards you can reference. No fluff. Just the specs you need to make better purchasing decisions — and to justify premium fabric choices to end clients who think all fabric is the same.
Thread count gets all the attention because bedding brands have drilled it into consumers' heads. Higher number = better, right?
Not exactly. For curtains, thread count matters differently than for bed sheets.
Thread count in curtain fabric is measured as threads per 10cm square, combining both warp (vertical) and weft (horizontal) yarns. A mid-range curtain fabric sits around 120–180 threads per 10cm. Premium jacquards and damasks push past 220. Budget polyester prints from bulk importers? Sometimes as low as 68.
But here's what most suppliers won't tell you: thread count without yarn quality is meaningless. A 160-thread fabric using long-staple combed yarns will outperform a 200-thread fabric made with short, recycled fibre every single time. The yarns snap less, pill less, and hold dye better.
At our warehouse, we stock roughly 287 fabric codes across all collections. We've tested enough to know that anything below 90 threads per 10cm will show weave gaps when held up to light — a dead giveaway of cheap construction. For residential projects like a semi-D in Bangsar or a serviced apartment in Bukit Bintang, we recommend fabrics in the 140–190 range as the sweet spot between cost and longevity.
GSM — grams per square metre — measures how much fibre is packed into the fabric. It's a more reliable indicator than thread count for curtain applications because it accounts for yarn thickness, not just yarn quantity.
Here's a rough breakdown by curtain type:

Higher GSM doesn't automatically mean better drape. A stiff 310 gsm blackout polyester won't hang as nicely as a softer 195 gsm cotton-poly blend with proper weave construction. Drape comes from weave type — a satin weave at 180 gsm will flow better than a plain weave at 240 gsm. So if your client wants that fluid, cascading look for their living room in a KL condo, don't just chase high GSM numbers.
Check the selvedge too. Properly woven fabric has a tight, even selvedge — usually 1.5 to 2cm wide — with the mill's production info printed on it. If the selvedge is loose, fraying, or has no identification markings, the fabric likely came from a low-end facility with minimal quality control.
Malaysia sits roughly 3 degrees north of the equator. Our UV exposure is brutal. A fabric rated 3 out of 5 for lightfastness will visibly fade in a west-facing window within 6 months. That's not an exaggeration — we've seen it happen in a shophouse project in Bangsar where the contractor used imported fabric without checking the lightfastness grade.
Colourfastness is tested under ISO 105 standards and rated on a 1-to-5 scale:

For any curtain project in Malaysia, minimum lightfastness should be grade 4. Full stop. Grade 5 if the fabric faces direct afternoon sun. And for velvet curtain fabric — which tends to show fading more visibly due to the pile direction catching light unevenly — insist on grade 5 or be prepared for complaints within the first year.
Don't confuse lightfastness with washfastness or rubfastness. Those are separate tests under the same ISO 105 family. A fabric can score 5 on lightfastness and 2 on rubfastness, meaning the colour stays under sunlight but rubs off onto hands or walls. Ask your supplier for the full test breakdown, not just a single number.
The Martindale test is the gold standard for fabric durability. Named after the testing apparatus, it measures how many rubs a fabric can withstand before it starts pilling or wearing through. The fabric sample is rubbed in a figure-eight pattern against standard wool under a set pressure.
For curtains, Martindale matters less than for upholstery — but it still matters. Think about curtains near a sliding door that gets opened 15 times a day. Or a child's bedroom where little hands grab the fabric constantly. Or hotel room curtains that housekeeping touches twice daily.
General benchmarks:
Most curtain fabrics aren't tested for Martindale because the industry considers it optional. But if you're specifying fabric for a hotel in KLCC or a hospital, ask for it. The test report exists — the supplier just might not volunteer it. And if they can't produce one at all, that tells you something about their quality standards.
Tensile strength measures how much force a fabric can take before it tears. For curtains, this matters at stress points: the heading tape, the hook insertions, the hem weights. A blackout curtain panel at 320cm width in a heavy 280 gsm fabric puts significant strain on the heading — if the fabric's tensile strength is low, you'll see tearing along the hook points within a year.
Dimensional stability is about shrinkage and stretch. Tested under ISO 5077, it measures how much a fabric changes dimensions after washing or steaming. A quality curtain fabric should show less than 2% shrinkage in both warp and weft directions. Anything above 3% means the curtain will visibly shorten after the first cleaning — and for floor-length installations, even 2cm of shrinkage is noticeable.
We've had contractors come to us after a bad experience with unbranded imported fabric that shrank 5.7% after steam cleaning. The curtains — installed in a hotel in Putrajaya — ended up sitting 8cm above the floor. The hotel demanded replacements at the contractor's expense. All because nobody checked the dimensional stability rating before ordering 430 metres of the stuff.
Always request a dimensional stability report for any fabric going into a hospitality or commercial project. If the supplier can't provide one, buy 2 metres first and test it yourself — steam clean it at the temperature you'd normally use, then measure the change. Better to spend RM30 on a test piece than RM12,000 on replacements.
Not every purchase justifies a full lab report. Sometimes you're buying 15 metres for a residential job and you just need a fast assessment. Here's what we tell our walk-in customers at Taman Desaria.
The light test. Hold the fabric up to a window or strong light source. Uneven weave shows up immediately — you'll see thin spots where light passes through more brightly. This takes 3 seconds and catches the worst offenders.
The rub test. Fold the fabric over itself and rub firmly with your thumb 20 to 30 times. Cheap fabric pills almost instantly — tiny balls of fibre forming on the surface. Quality fabric stays smooth. This is basically a manual version of the Martindale test.
The stretch test. Pull the fabric diagonally — corner to corner. Good fabric resists and springs back to shape. Poor fabric distorts permanently. If you can see the weave opening up under moderate hand pressure, that fabric won't survive hanging at 280cm drops with pleat folds adding stress.
The smell test. Yes, really. Strong chemical odour means aggressive finishing treatments — often used to temporarily improve the hand feel of cheap base cloth. The treatments wash out, and you're left with rough, flat fabric that bears no resemblance to the sample you approved.
The selvedge check. A clean, tight selvedge with printed lot numbers, colourway codes, or mill identification marks indicates legitimate production. Loose, uneven selvedge with no markings usually means small-batch or backyard production with inconsistent quality control. Not always bad — but buyer beware.
If you're an interior designer or curtain contractor, quality metrics aren't just for your own purchasing decisions. They're a sales tool.
When a client pushes back on price — "Why is your linen curtain fabric RM19 per metre when I can get langsir kain from that kedai near Jalan Ipoh for RM7?" — you now have an answer that goes beyond "ours is better." You can point to specific ratings. Grade 5 lightfastness versus untested. 18,000 Martindale rubs versus unknown. Less than 1.8% shrinkage versus who knows.
Numbers shut down the price argument fast. Your client isn't comparing fabric anymore — they're comparing risk. And risk has a cost that always exceeds the fabric price difference.
For condo projects, mention the re-installation cost if fabric fails. A single unit's curtain replacement — fabric, sewing, hardware, installer — runs RM1,500 to RM4,000 depending on scope. That's a lot more than the RM200-400 difference between using tested versus untested fabric across an entire unit.
For hotel and commercial projects, frame it as operational risk. A hotel with 147 rooms needing curtain replacement in year two because of UV fade — that's a procurement disaster nobody wants to explain to management.
