That soft, almost velvety pile comes from how the yarn is made — short fibres are twisted around a core thread, creating what the French called chenille because it looks like a caterpillar. This isn't a marketing name. It's a genuine textile construction technique that produces fabric with depth you can see and feel from across the room.
Chenille curtain fabric sits in a class between velvet and heavier woven drapes. It has pile, but not the sheen of crushed velvet. It has body, but it drapes softer than jacquard. The heavier ones — 340gsm and above — hang beautifully on their own as a single panel, no lining needed for the drape, though you'll still want lining for light control.

Most suppliers won't tell you this, but cheap chenille pills badly. And once chenille starts pilling, it looks worse than almost any other fabric — those little balls of fibre sitting on top of a plush surface are impossible to ignore. This is why we test every batch to a minimum Martindale abrasion rating of 20,000 rubs and a pilling grade of 4 on the 5-point scale.
The difference between RM8-per-metre chenille and RM18-per-metre chenille is almost entirely in the yarn twist and fibre quality. Tighter twist means less fibre migration. Less fibre migration means no pilling. Simple.
But even with quality fabric, care matters. Chenille should be dry cleaned or washed on a gentle cold cycle — never tumble dried. We've seen perfectly good 280gsm chenille ruined by one hot dryer cycle at a laundry. The heat loosens the pile twist permanently. There's no fixing that.
For high-traffic commercial installations, specify chenille with a Martindale rating above 30,000 rubs. We carry several ranges that hit 35,000 — those are the ones we recommend for hotel corridors, restaurant divider curtains, and serviced apartment units where the fabric gets handled daily.
Sunlight is harsh in Malaysia. We're close to the equator and west-facing windows in particular take a beating from 2pm onwards. Our chenille stocks carry a minimum lightfastness rating of Grade 5 (out of 8 on the ISO 105-B02 scale), which translates to roughly 3-4 years before noticeable fading on a west-facing window without UV film.
For clients asking about colour retention beyond that, we suggest pairing with UV-blocking window film or specifying our solution-dyed ranges where the pigment is embedded in the polyester fibre itself rather than applied as a surface dye. These run RM3-4 more per metre but the colour retention is dramatically better.

Indent orders from our partner mills in Shaoxing and Haining take 35-45 days typically, though this stretches to 60+ days around Chinese New Year. Stock runs low before Raya too — curtain makers across the Klang Valley rush to complete projects before the holiday, so place your Raya orders by early February if you want colour selection.
Chenille pairs well with blackout lining for bedrooms. The combination gives you the textured front face with full light block behind. We supply the blackout lining in white and off-white specifically so it doesn't show through the chenille weave.
For living rooms and feature windows, some designers layer a sheer behind chenille panels held on a double bracket track. The sheer softens daytime light while the chenille frames the window. This is popular in the Bangsar and Damansara Heights crowd — they want the curtains to look designed, not just functional.
But skip the lining if you're using chenille as a room divider or decorative panel in a restaurant. Unlined chenille moves better and the slight translucency through the weave creates a nice diffused glow from behind.
