Why cinema curtain fabric is different
Cinemas and theatres demand fabric that ordinary curtain suppliers simply do not stock. Here is what the spec actually calls for.
Cinemas are not bedrooms. A cinema hall drape has to kill every last photon of ambient light, dampen sound reflections off hard walls, and pass BOMBA fire safety inspection before a single ticket gets sold. And it has to do all three while looking good under house lights at 3,000 lumens.
Most suppliers won't tell you this, but the biggest reason cinema curtain projects go wrong is fabric weight. Contractors grab a standard 180gsm blackout curtain fabric thinking "blackout is blackout." It is not. That lightweight residential blackout will billow under the air-conditioning ducts, show every crease line from folding, and do almost nothing for acoustics. Cinema halls need fabric starting at 280gsm minimum, and serious stage drapes run 380gsm to 450gsm.
Total blackout performance
Cinema projection requires absolute darkness. Not 95% dimout. Not "pretty dark." Zero light bleed around screen masking, side drapes, and the main curtain. That means 100% blackout construction — either triple-pass coated or inherently opaque woven velvet in stage curtain material heavy enough to hang dead flat without light gaps at the edges.
We stock blackout cinema fabric in 300cm width (118″) specifically for this reason. Wider fabric means fewer seams, and fewer seams means fewer potential light leaks. For a standard Malaysian cinema hall with a proscenium opening of 11 to 14 metres, you want continuous drops with minimal joining.
Acoustic absorption
A bare concrete cinema box is an acoustic nightmare. Hard parallel walls create flutter echo that ruins dialogue clarity. Heavy theatre curtain fabric on the side walls and rear wall acts as a broadband absorber, pulling down reverberation time (RT60) by roughly 0.3 to 0.6 seconds depending on coverage area and fabric weight.
For proper acoustic treatment, the fabric needs mass. A 320gsm commando cloth or velvet curtain fabric at 380gsm will absorb mid-to-high frequency reflections far better than a thin polyester drape. The rule is simple: heavier fabric, better absorption. AV consultants who spec cinema fit-outs already know this, but we see too many general contractors trying to save RM3 per metre on fabric weight and then spending RM30,000 on corrective acoustic panels after opening.
Fire retardant compliance
Every public entertainment venue in Malaysia — cinemas, theatres, concert halls, community auditoriums — must comply with UBBL fire safety requirements enforced by BOMBA. Curtain fabric in these spaces needs to be certified flame retardant.
Two standards dominate the Malaysian market: BS 5867 Part 2 (British standard, widely accepted by BOMBA) and NFPA 701 (American standard, common in international cinema chain specs). We supply FR-rated cinema curtain fabric with test certificates you can submit directly to your fire safety consultant or local authority.
But here is where it gets tricky. FR treatment washes out over time on chemically treated fabrics. For cinemas, we strongly recommend inherently flame retardant (IFR) fabric — the fire resistance is built into the fibre itself and does not degrade with age or cleaning. The price per metre is higher (typically RM18–35 versus RM8–15 for treated FR), but you avoid the headache of re-treatment every few years and the liability risk if a random BOMBA inspection catches degraded FR performance.
Traditional stage curtain aesthetics
Not every cinema looks like a GSC multiplex. Boutique cinemas, performing arts centres, and refurbished heritage theatres want the classic stage look: a deep red or burgundy velvet main drape with proper swag, matching tab curtains that part smoothly on a motorised track, and black wool serge borders and legs framing the stage. That old-school theatre aesthetic requires specific fabrics.
Main drape velvet needs a dense, upright pile for that rich light-absorbing look. Stage curtain material at 22oz per linear yard (roughly 420gsm) is the traditional theatre weight. Tab curtains can be slightly lighter — 14oz to 16oz — because they need to travel on track without binding. Borders and legs are almost always matte black commando cloth or wool serge, selected for zero shine under stage lighting.

Main drape & tab curtains
The main drape is the star. It is the first thing the audience sees when they walk in and the last thing they see before the lights go down. For Malaysian cinemas, the standard choice is a cotton-polyester velvet or 100% polyester IFR velvet in 300cm width, typically in deep red, burgundy, or midnight blue. We carry stage curtain material in roughly 47 colourways for the main drape, though the classic reds and blues account for about 80% of cinema orders we handle.
Tab curtains — the pair that parts to reveal the screen — should match the main drape fabric but can be a lighter weight for smoother track travel. We typically recommend 320gsm for tabs versus 380–420gsm for the stationary main drape.
Borders, legs, and masking
These are the workhorses. Borders (horizontal top pieces) and legs (vertical side pieces) frame the stage opening and hide rigging, lighting bars, and speaker arrays. Nearly always matte black. The fabric needs to be dead-flat with zero sheen — any reflection under 4K projection is immediately visible to the audience.
We supply two options: wool serge (the traditional theatre choice, naturally flame retardant, exceptional at absorbing light) and IFR commando cloth (polyester-based, more affordable, and easier to source in Malaysia). Both work. Wool serge drapes better but costs roughly 40% more per metre. For a new 8-hall multiplex in somewhere like Bukit Jalil or Setia Alam, commando cloth makes commercial sense. For a performing arts centre or heritage theatre restoration, wool serge is worth the premium.
Screen masking fabric
Screen masking is a different beast entirely. This is the matte black fabric that sits right beside the projection screen, and it has one job: absorb every stray photon without bouncing anything back. Standard black fabric will not do — it needs an NRC (noise reduction coefficient) tested surface or a specially flocked finish with less than 2% light reflectance.
We stock dedicated cinema masking fabric at 137cm (54″) width with a velour flock face. Yes, the narrow width means more seaming, but masking panels are typically only 60–90cm wide anyway, running floor to ceiling beside the screen. The material is also IFR rated as standard.
Acoustic wall drapes
Many cinema designers now use heavy fabric panels on the side and rear walls as part of the acoustic treatment package, alongside foam and diffuser panels. This is where a heavyweight velvet curtain fabric at 380gsm or above really earns its keep. Hung with an air gap of 50–100mm behind the fabric, it acts as a broadband absorber for frequencies from about 500Hz upward.
And the cost? Fabric acoustic treatment is significantly cheaper than purpose-built acoustic panels per square metre of coverage. A cinema operator fitting out 6 halls will care very much about that difference.

A note on project planning
Cinema curtain fabric orders are project-driven, not off-the-shelf retail. The smart way to buy: send us your hall drawings or at least the proscenium width, ceiling height, and curtain layout (main drape, tabs, borders, legs, masking). We will calculate the meterage at the correct fullness ratio — typically 200% for main drapes and tabs, 100% for borders and legs.
Lead time matters. Ready stock colours ship within 3–5 working days. But if your cinema design calls for a custom colour — say a specific Pantone burgundy to match the operator's brand guidelines — that is an indent order with 6–8 weeks lead time from the mill. During Chinese New Year shutdown or peak container season, add another 2–3 weeks. Plan accordingly. We have seen too many cinema openings delayed because someone ordered the fabric two weeks before the curtain tukang was supposed to start sewing.
