Curtain Fabric for Hospitals

Most suppliers won't tell you this, but the majority of so-called "hospital curtain fabric" sold through kedai kain along Jalan Ipoh and the Chow Kit textile district is just standard polyester with no antibacterial treatment and no fire retardant certification. It looks fine on a sample card. But it will not survive a hospital environment for more than a few months, and it definitely will not pass a JKR site inspection.

Real hospital curtain fabric starts with inherently flame-retardant polyester fibre — not a topical FR spray that washes off after three cycles. The antibacterial treatment needs to be bonded at the fibre level, typically using silver-ion or zinc-pyrithione compounds tested to AATCC 147 or ISO 20743. And the fabric must handle industrial laundering at 70°C to 90°C without shrinking, without losing its FR properties, and without the antibacterial finish degrading below effective levels.

That is a very different product from what most curtain shops carry.

JKR and MOH compliance matters

Government hospital projects in Malaysia follow JKR (Jabatan Kerja Raya) technical specifications. These specs reference BS 5867 Part 2 for curtain flame retardancy — a British Standard that requires the fabric to self-extinguish within a defined time after flame removal. Private hospitals and clinics typically follow Ministry of Health infection control guidelines, which specify antimicrobial soft furnishings in patient contact areas.

If you are a contractor bidding on a hospital project, your curtain fabric must come with test certificates. No certificate, no approval. We have seen contractors lose projects worth RM200,000 or more because they submitted fabric without proper FR and antibacterial documentation. We supply the test reports with every order.

Cubicle curtain specs: what procurement teams actually need

Hospital cubicle curtains are not the same as window curtains. They hang from ceiling-mounted track systems and separate patient beds in wards, A&E bays, and dialysis centres. The fabric requirements are specific:

• Width of 280cm (110") to run from track to floor without horizontal seaming
• Weight between 180gsm and 260gsm — heavy enough for privacy, light enough for track gliders
• Mesh header strip at the top 30cm to 46cm for air circulation and sprinkler clearance
• Grommeted header holes at roughly 15cm spacing for snap hooks on the track carrier
• Bottom hem weighted or chain-weighted to keep the curtain hanging straight

We supply the fabric per metre or per roll. Your tukang jahit or curtain contractor handles the sewing, mesh header attachment, and grommet installation. But we can advise on the correct spec — because getting the mesh header wrong is a common mistake that causes rework on site.

Antibacterial treatment: how it works and how long it lasts

The antibacterial finish on medical curtain fabric inhibits bacterial colonisation on the fabric surface. This matters because hospital cubicle curtains are touched constantly — by patients, visitors, nurses pulling them closed, cleaning staff brushing past them. Studies show untreated hospital curtains can harbour MRSA and other pathogens within 72 hours of being hung.

Quality antibacterial treatments last through 50 to 75 industrial wash cycles before retreatment is recommended. Some cheaper treatments wash out after 15 to 20 cycles. Ask for the wash durability test report — not just the initial antibacterial efficacy report. There is a difference, and most pembekal skip mentioning this.

Fire retardant rating: BS 5867 vs BS 5852

For curtain fabric in hospitals, the relevant standard is BS 5867 Part 2 (fabrics for curtains and drapes). This tests vertical flame spread. Do not confuse it with BS 5852, which covers upholstery and seating — different test, different application. Some suppliers will hand you a BS 5852 certificate for curtain fabric. That is the wrong certificate.

Colour and design for healthcare

Hospital fabric is not just clinical white and pale blue anymore. Modern healthcare design uses colour psychology — calming greens for recovery wards, warm neutrals for maternity suites, cheerful tones for paediatric areas. Our fabrics are tested to ISO 105-C06 at grade 4 minimum for wash fastness, meaning the colour holds even after repeated laundering at high temperatures. That pale green cubicle curtain still looks pale green six months later — not washed-out grey.

A typical Malaysian hospital replaces cubicle curtains every 12 to 18 months. Busier wards — A&E, ICU, dialysis — replace every 8 to 12 months. That is a recurring procurement need, not a one-off purchase.
