Why Mosque Curtain Fabric Requires a Specialist Pembekal

Mosque curtains aren't just decorative. They serve a functional role — managing light during prayers, separating men's and women's sections, creating privacy for multi-purpose halls used as surau, community events, and classes. And they do all this while representing the dignity of the masjid itself.

We've supplied mosque curtain fabric across Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Negeri Sembilan, and Johor for over 19 years. From the small neighbourhood surau in Taman Tun Dr Ismail to large state mosques, the requirements differ wildly. But one thing stays the same: the fabric must be appropriate.

Not every kedai kain understands what "appropriate" means here.

The colour has to be right — deep greens, navy, cream, or burgundy. The weight needs to be sufficient for proper draping without looking limp. And for any public assembly building, BOMBA's fire safety requirements apply. Most suppliers won't tell you this, but generic curtain fabric from the Jalan Ipoh fabric district often doesn't come with fire test documentation. You'll only discover this when the committee asks for certificates during renovation handover.

We carry velvet curtain fabric and heavyweight polyester specifically graded for mosque applications — 240gsm to 320gsm weight, available in 280cm and 320cm widths. That extra width matters. Prayer halls have tall windows, sometimes 3.5 metres floor to pelmet. A 280cm-wide fabric hung sideways eliminates horizontal seams entirely, giving you a clean, unbroken fall.

Choosing Colours and Patterns for Masjid Curtain Fabric

Green dominates. That's no surprise — it's the colour most associated with Islam, and roughly 63% of our mosque projects use some shade of green. Emerald, sage, olive, and forest green are all in regular rotation.

But green isn't compulsory.

Royal blue works beautifully in modern mosque architecture. Cream and off-white create a serene, airy feel for surau with smaller windows. Burgundy adds warmth to community halls that double as prayer spaces. Gold accents — either woven into the fabric or as a trim — are popular for the mihrab area and main prayer hall feature curtains.

As for patterns, geometric Islamic motifs are available but most mosque committees prefer solid colours or very subtle tone-on-tone jacquard weaves. The pattern should not distract from prayer. We keep roughly 47 colours in ready stock for plain mosque-grade fabric, and can source custom geometric-pattern jacquard with a 200-metre MOQ per design. Lead time for custom runs is typically 8–12 weeks from China ports, so plan ahead — especially before Ramadan and Raya when stock runs low across the industry.

Fire Safety: The Requirement Most People Miss

Any mosque, surau, or prayer hall classified as a public assembly building needs curtain fabric that meets fire-retardant standards. This isn't optional. Local councils and BOMBA inspect for this, and the mosque's takaful coverage may require it too.

Our mosque curtain fabrics are tested to BS 5867 Part 2 (the British standard most widely referenced in Malaysia) and can be certified to MS 1396 on request. We provide fire test certificates with every bulk order — one original plus copies for the mosque committee, the contractor, and the local authority submission.

There are two approaches to fire safety in curtain fabric. Inherently fire-retardant (IFR) fabric has the treatment built into the fibre itself — it never washes out. Topically treated fabric has a chemical coating applied after weaving. Both pass the required tests initially, but IFR lasts the full life of the curtain while topical treatments degrade after 3–5 wash cycles.

For mosques, we strongly recommend IFR fabric. These curtains hang for years. Nobody wants to re-treat them every 18 months. The price difference is roughly RM3–5 per metre more — insignificant across a whole project budget.

Partition Curtains for Multi-Purpose Halls

Many mosques today have multi-purpose halls — used for prayers, kenduri, classes, and community events. Partition curtains need to be different from window curtains.

They're heavier. They need to block sight and sound to some degree. They run on ceiling-mounted tracks, often spanning 8 to 12 metres. And they get pulled open and closed far more often than window curtains, so the fabric must handle that wear without developing track marks or stress tears along the heading.

We supply partition-grade fabric in 360gsm heavyweight polyester and blackout curtain fabric with triple-weave construction specifically for this use. The heading tape and track hardware matter just as much as the fabric — we can advise your tukang jahit or curtain maker on the right combination for your hall dimensions.

One more thing about partitions: acoustic performance. A 360gsm fabric with proper fullness (we recommend 2× to 2.5× the track width) absorbs a surprising amount of sound. Not enough to replace acoustic panels, but enough to make a noticeable difference when the hall is divided.

Fabric Specifications for Prayer Hall Projects

Here's what we typically recommend for mosque projects based on 19 years of supplying masjid curtain fabric across Peninsular Malaysia:

• Main prayer hall windows: Velvet or IFR polyester, 280gsm–320gsm, 280cm or 320cm width. Colours: emerald, forest green, navy, cream. Price range RM12–18 per metre depending on finish.
• Women's prayer area: Same specification as main hall, or one step lighter at 240gsm for a softer drape. Sheer secondary curtains in cream or white are sometimes layered underneath.
• Surau / small prayer rooms: Medium-weight linen-look fabric or polyester at 180–240gsm. RM8–14 per metre. Works well for office surau and residential musolla.
• Multi-purpose hall partitions: Heavyweight blackout at 320gsm–360gsm with reinforced heading. Ceiling track required. RM15–22 per metre.
• Entrance and corridor curtains: Medium-weight fabric with antimicrobial treatment. High traffic means more frequent replacement — choose a lower price point and replace every 3–4 years.

All widths are quoted at standard 280cm (110 inches) unless otherwise specified. We also carry 300cm (118 inches) width in select colours — useful for extra-tall windows in larger masjid.

Ordering Process for Mosque Projects

Most mosque curtain projects come through one of three channels: the mosque committee directly, the renovation contractor, or the curtain maker (tukang langsir). We work with all three.

Walk into our showroom at Lot 1509, Batu 8, Jalan Klang Lama, Taman Desaria. We have sample books with the full range of mosque-appropriate colours and weights. Take samples back to the committee for approval. No charge for sample cuttings.

For outstation projects, we courier sample swatches within 2 working days. Just WhatsApp us the project details — hall dimensions, window sizes, preferred colours — and we'll recommend specific fabrics with pricing. Our MOQ is 50 metres per colour for standard stock, which covers most small to mid-sized mosque projects comfortably.

And if you're working on a large state mosque or institutional project with a tender process, we provide official quotations with company stamp, fire test certificates, and fabric specification sheets suitable for tender submission. Similar to how we handle hotel curtain fabric projects — structured, documented, and with clear lead times.

Delivery within Klang Valley is free for orders above RM1,500. Outstation delivery via courier or lorry typically takes 3–5 working days depending on location.

Working With Mosque Committees and Contractors

We understand the decision-making process for mosque projects is different from commercial work. A hotel GM decides in a week. A mosque committee might take two months because every colour choice and budget line needs consensus from the AJK.

That's fine. We hold fabric reservations for up to 30 days at quoted prices. Samples can be re-ordered if the first set gets passed around too much. And we're happy to attend committee meetings in person for projects within Klang Valley to present options directly — bring the sample books, explain the fire safety requirements, and answer the committee members' questions face to face.

For contractors handling the full renovation scope, we provide trade pricing and can coordinate delivery timing with your fit-out schedule. No point shipping fabric 6 weeks before the curtain maker is ready — it just sits on site collecting dust.
