Base fabrics
Choosing the right base for embroidery
The base fabric is half the equation. A gorgeous floral stitch on the wrong base cloth is just expensive disappointment. Here is how the three main base options compare for embroidered curtain fabric in the Malaysian market.
Voile base
The workhorse. Polyester voile at 55–75gsm takes embroidery cleanly and drapes in soft folds. It lets the most light through, so the stitched pattern casts clear shadows on the floor when the sun hits. Voile-based embroidered fabric accounts for about 70% of what we sell. Price point starts from RM8 per metre at wholesale for simple designs, going up to RM12 for dense multi-colour work.
But voile has limits. Heavy embroidery on voile can cause the panel to hang unevenly — the stitched sections weigh more than the plain areas, pulling the fabric off-plumb. If the embroidery covers more than 60% of the panel surface, consider a heavier base instead.
Organza base
Stiffer than voile, with a crisp hand feel and slight sheen. Organza holds its shape better under dense embroidery because the tighter weave resists distortion. The downside is less natural drape — organza-based embroidered panels look best in structured installations like fixed panels or tab-top treatments, not gathered on a standard curtain track.
Organza embroidered fabric is a favourite for hotel lobbies and function rooms. The way it catches light is different from voile — more luminous, almost glass-like. We keep 28 organza-based designs in ready stock, mostly in white, ivory, and champagne tones.
Linen-look base
Not actual linen, but a polyester-viscose blend woven to mimic linen's natural slub texture. Heavier at 95–130gsm. This base suits tonal and textural embroidery styles where the fabric itself contributes to the visual effect. The extra weight means better drape even with heavy stitching, and the textured surface hides minor wrinkles between washes.
Linen-look embroidered panels are what ID firms spec for shophouse conversions in Bangsar and premium show units. The look reads expensive. And at RM12–15 per metre wholesale, it is still cheaper than actual linen curtain fabric with custom embroidery commissioned separately.
