Heavy-duty outdoor curtain fabric engineered for Malaysia's punishing UV, monsoon rain, and year-round humidity. Built for resorts, poolside cabanas, landed patios, and commercial F&B frontages — from our warehouse in Petaling Jaya.
Most curtain fabric sold along the Jalan Ipoh fabric district and even at established kedai kain in PJ was never designed for outdoor use. Not even close. Regular polyester or cotton blends start degrading within three months under direct Malaysian sun — the colour fades, the fibre weakens, and mould sets in once the monsoon arrives.
Malaysia sits roughly 3 degrees north of the equator. UV intensity here is brutal.
That means your typical linen curtain fabric or uncoated polyester will lose 40–60% of its colour depth inside six months of outdoor exposure. We've seen hotel projects in Port Dickson where the contractor used indoor-grade fabric for poolside cabanas. Had to replace everything before the resort even opened. Total waste of budget.
Outdoor waterproof curtain fabric is a different product category entirely. The yarn construction, the dye process, the finishing chemistry — all engineered from scratch for UV exposure, standing water, salt air, and the kind of humidity that makes regular fabric a mould farm. And yet most pembekal in KL still try to sell indoor fabric with a basic water-repellent spray as "outdoor rated." It's not the same thing. Not by a long shot.
Two main technologies dominate the outdoor curtain fabric market. Your choice depends on budget, expected lifespan, and how harsh the exposure will be.
This is the premium tier. The colour pigment gets mixed into the acrylic polymer melt before it's extruded into yarn — meaning the colour runs through the entire fibre, not just sitting on the surface. Think of it like dyeing concrete versus painting it. Even if you scratch the surface, same colour underneath.
Performance numbers: UV colour fastness grade 7–8 (out of 8), water column rating typically 350mm+, weight around 240–310gsm depending on the weave. We stock solution-dyed acrylics in 47 colourways at our Jalan Klang Lama warehouse, most in 120-inch (305cm) width for seamless drops on tall patio openings.
Price sits between RM18 and RM28 per metre depending on weight and width. Expensive? Compared to indoor fabric, yes. But a resort in Langkawi that installs solution-dyed acrylic outdoor curtains can expect 6 to 8 years of service. The maths works out.
Budget-friendly option. Standard polyester base yarn with PU (polyurethane) or acrylic coating applied to the back face. The coating provides waterproofing — typically 300mm water column — while the polyester gives you a wider colour palette and lower cost.
Runs RM8 to RM15 per metre. MOQ 50 metres per colour. Ready stock in 31 colours, 110-inch (280cm) width. Good enough for covered patios, restaurant frontages, and semi-sheltered areas where the fabric isn't baking in full sun all day.
Most suppliers won't tell you this, but coated polyester outdoor fabric has a shelf life even before installation. The coating starts to degrade after roughly 18 months in storage, especially in non-air-conditioned warehouses. Always check the manufacturing date on the roll tag. We rotate our stock every 8 months to avoid this problem — ask your current supplier if they do the same.
Three things destroy outdoor fabric in Malaysia: UV radiation, monsoon rain, and mould. Each needs a different defence.
UV degradation. Our latitude means the sun hits hard 12 months a year. No winter reprieve. Solution-dyed fabric handles this natively — the colour is UV-stable at the molecular level. For coated polyester, look for UV stabiliser additives in the coating formulation. We test all our outdoor ranges against ISO 105-B02 (xenon arc test) before listing them.
Monsoon rain. The northeast monsoon dumps 250–350mm of rain per month across the west coast. Outdoor curtain fabric needs a water column rating of at least 300mm. But waterproofing alone isn't enough — the fabric must also dry quickly. Our acrylic ranges shed water on contact and air-dry in 30 to 45 minutes under typical Malaysian conditions. Coated polyester dries faster because the coating prevents moisture absorption, but the coating itself can trap dampness at the seams if not properly finished.
Mould and mildew. This is the one that catches most people off guard. Humidity in KL hovers between 70% and 90% year-round. Indoor fabric left outdoors will grow mould within 2 to 3 weeks during monsoon season. Our outdoor fabrics carry antimicrobial treatment as standard — not an aftermarket spray, but a factory-applied finish bonded to the fibre. Still, proper installation matters. Fabric should never bunch against wet walls or pool against the ground.
We supply outdoor waterproof curtain fabric to three main project types.
Resort and hotel poolside areas. Cabanas, pool bars, open-air restaurants. This is where solution-dyed acrylic earns its price tag. We've supplied fabric for projects in Desaru Coast, Genting Highlands, and a boutique resort in Pangkor. The spec usually calls for 118-inch width, 280gsm minimum, with antimicrobial and flame-retardant treatment. Yes, outdoor fabric can be fire-rated too — BS 5867 Part 2 compliance is available on request.
F&B frontages. Kopitiam operators, mamak restaurants, rooftop bars. These projects typically run with coated polyester for cost reasons. A shophouse in Bangsar or an open-air cafe along Jalan Telawi doesn't need the same longevity as a 5-star resort. Three to four years of service at RM8–15 per metre is perfectly acceptable here. We keep 31 ready-stock colours for quick turnaround — most tukang jahit can collect fabric same day from our Taman Desaria location.
Landed property patios and balconies. Homeowners with semi-outdoor living spaces — covered patios, car porches converted to lounge areas, garden pavilions. A bungalow in Damansara Heights or a semi-D in Mont Kiara. These clients often want the fabric to match their interior velvet curtain fabric or linen drapes, so colour coordination matters. We can provide swatch books for side-by-side comparison.
Straight numbers. No fluff.
We hold roughly 11,400 metres of outdoor fabric in our Petaling Jaya warehouse at any given time. Stock runs low before Hari Raya and Chinese New Year — if your project timeline falls near a major holiday, order early. Container shipments from our mills in China take 28–35 days port to port, and clearing Westports adds another 3–5 working days.
For custom colourways not in ready stock, minimum production run is 500 metres per colour with a 45-day lead time. But honestly, for most projects the existing 78-colour palette covers everything. We've supplied enough hospitality projects to know what works.
Need to match your outdoor fabric with indoor drapes? Our wholesale curtain fabric catalogue covers the full range — blackout curtain fabric for bedrooms, linen for sheer layers, and outdoor-grade for exposed areas. One supplier, one delivery, one invoice. Makes life simpler for the contractor and the purchasing department.
Practical reasons, not marketing talk
Solution-dyed yarn holds its colour for 6–8 years under equatorial sun. Grade 7–8 lightfastness tested to ISO 105-B02. No fading surprises mid-project.
Water column ratings from 300mm upward — tested against sustained downpour, not just a light drizzle. Fabric sheds water on contact, dries in under 45 minutes.
Factory-bonded antimicrobial finish rated for 3 to 5 years. Critical in Malaysia where 80%+ humidity is the norm from October through March.
126-inch rolls mean fewer seams on tall drops — cleaner look for resort lobbies and double-volume patio spaces. Stock widths in 54", 110", 118", and 126".
Selected outdoor ranges carry BS 5867 Part 2 certification for commercial projects where fire compliance is mandatory. Ask for the test report.

Real questions from contractors and designers we work with
Solution-dyed acrylic outdoor fabric typically lasts 5 to 8 years under direct Malaysian sun with proper maintenance. Coated polyester options may need replacement after 3 to 4 years depending on UV exposure. The key factor is whether the fabric uses solution-dyed yarn, where colour is locked into the fibre during manufacturing, versus piece-dyed fabric that fades much faster.
Yes. Our outdoor waterproof curtain fabrics carry water column ratings of 300mm and above, meaning they repel heavy monsoon rain without letting water soak through. The fabric sheds water on contact. For permanent outdoor installations exposed to driving rain, we recommend adding weighted hems and proper drainage at the bottom to prevent pooling.
For standard colours in ready stock, our MOQ is 50 metres per colour. Walk-in customers buying direct from our Jalan Klang Lama showroom can purchase as little as 5 metres for sampling or small projects. Contract pricing for resort and hotel projects starts at 200 metres per order.
Absolutely. Many interior designers use outdoor-grade fabric for high-traffic indoor areas like hotel lobbies, restaurant dining halls, and childcare centres because of its stain resistance and durability. The texture has improved significantly — modern outdoor fabrics feel soft, not plasticky. We stock indoor-outdoor crossover ranges in 118-inch widths.
Hose down with plain water for regular cleaning. For mould or stubborn stains, mix one part white vinegar to four parts water and scrub gently with a soft brush. Avoid bleach on solution-dyed acrylics. Machine washing is not recommended as it damages the water-repellent coating. Most of our outdoor fabrics dry within 30 to 45 minutes in Malaysian heat.
Yes, hospitality projects are a major part of our outdoor fabric business. We supply to resorts in Langkawi, Port Dickson, and Desaru Coast. For contract work we provide free sample cuttings, project pricing based on volume, and direct delivery to site. Lead time is typically 2 to 3 weeks for non-stock colours.
