Why Polyester Dominates the Malaysian Curtain Market

Walk into any kedai kain along Jalan Ipoh or the fabric shops clustered around Campbell Street, and you'll find one thing in common: the bulk of their curtain stock is polyester. Not cotton. Not silk. Polyester.

There's a reason for that.

Polyester curtain fabric handles Malaysia's humidity without breaking a sweat — literally. It doesn't absorb moisture the way cotton does, which means it won't develop that musty smell you get in under-ventilated condos after a few months. The fibres resist mould and mildew. And in a tropical climate where your curtains face UV bombardment roughly 312 days a year, polyester holds its colour far longer than most natural alternatives.

We've been supplying poly curtain material wholesale to developers, tukang jahit workshops, and hotel purchasing teams from our warehouse in Taman Desaria since the early 2000s. Our current range covers 47 active collections — roughly 287 colourways across sheers, dim-outs, and full blackout curtain fabric constructions.

The Numbers That Matter for Bulk Buyers

Developers care about three things: price per unit, lead time, and warranty claims. Polyester curtain fabric wins on all three.

Cost. Our polyester range runs from RM8 to RM22 per metre depending on weight, weave, and finish. Compare that to linen curtain fabric at RM28-65 per metre, or velvet curtain fabric starting from RM35. For a typical 3-bedroom condo unit needing about 38 metres of fabric, that's the difference between RM304 and RM1,330 on material cost alone. Multiply across 200 units in a Mont Kiara development, and you're looking at savings upward of RM200,000.

Most suppliers won't tell you this, but the poly fabric that goes into a RM1.2 million condo in Bangsar is often the same 180gsm plain weave that goes into a budget apartment in Rawang. The difference is in the sewing, the lining, and the hardware — not the base cloth.

Lead time. Ready stock from our PJ warehouse ships within 2-3 business days. We maintain buffer stock on our top 23 best-sellers specifically for developer projects that need fast turnaround. Custom mill orders from Shaoxing take 35-45 days port to port, plus another 5-7 days for customs clearance at Port Klang.

Durability. A decent polyester curtain fabric rated at 180-240gsm will handle 15,000+ Martindale rub cycles. That's well above the 10,000-cycle threshold most hotel operators specify. We've had poly sheers installed in a KLCC serviced apartment block since 2019 — still holding up fine with annual professional cleaning.

Polyester vs Natural Fabrics — A Practical Comparison

The debate between synthetic curtain fabric and natural options comes up constantly with interior designers. Here's what actually matters when you're fitting out 150 hotel rooms or 400 condo units.

Cotton and linen have their place. A boutique hotel in George Town going for that raw, organic aesthetic? Linen works beautifully. But for a 38-storey residential tower where the developer needs consistent quality across every unit and minimal warranty callbacks? Polyester is the rational choice.

What We Stock — Widths, Weights & Finishes

Our polyester drapery fabric collection covers three main categories:

Sheers (80–120gsm). Voile, organza, and burnout patterns. Available in 118-inch (300cm) width. These are your day curtains — they diffuse light, provide daytime privacy, and soften the look of floor-to-ceiling glazing. We carry 63 sheer designs in stock.

Mid-weight solids and jacquards (140–200gsm). The bread and butter of residential curtain projects. These come in 110-inch to 126-inch widths (280–320cm). Most developers pick from this range. Good drape, easy to sew, holds pleats well. Available in plains, subtle textures, and woven geometric patterns.

Heavyweight and blackout (220–280gsm). Triple-weave or foam-backed constructions for bedrooms, home theatres, and hotel rooms. Block 95–100% of light. Our 240gsm triple-weave is the single most popular fabric we sell to developer projects — it does the job without needing separate lining, which saves on sewing cost.

All fabrics are stocked in full rolls of 50 metres. Cut lengths available from 5 metres with a RM5 cutting charge per cut.

Fabric Widths for Malaysian Ceilings

Standard Malaysian ceiling height sits at 2.8 to 3.0 metres in most new developments. Our 300cm-width polyester fabric is the go-to — it runs floor to ceiling without a horizontal seam. For premium developments with 3.2–3.6m ceilings (like some of the newer towers in Bukit Bintang), our 320cm-width range covers it.

And yes, we stock 54-inch (137cm) widths too, mainly for printed panels, cushion covers, and upholstery-adjacent work. But for langsir? Stick with 300cm or wider.

Ordering for Developer Bulk Projects

The process is straightforward.

First — come to our showroom on Jalan Klang Lama or request sample books via WhatsApp. We courier sample cards and memo swatches within Klang Valley at no charge. For developers outside KL, we post sample books Pos Laju — you just return them within 14 days.

Second — confirm your fabric selection, quantities per colour, and delivery schedule. For projects above 200 units, we assign a dedicated account manager and lock in pricing for the project duration. Stock runs low before Raya and during Chinese New Year, so plan your orders at least 6 weeks before major holiday periods.

Third — we deliver to your curtain contractor's workshop or directly to site. Klang Valley delivery is free for orders above RM2,000. Outstation delivery to Johor, Penang, Melaka, and Ipoh is arranged at cost.

Our pembekal network also extends to East Malaysia — we've shipped container loads to Kota Kinabalu and Kuching for resort projects. Container delays from Chinese ports have been unpredictable since 2023, so for projects that can't wait, our ready-stock range from the PJ warehouse is the safer bet.

A Note on Custom Orders

Custom polyester fabric for curtains — dyed to Pantone, printed with bespoke patterns, or woven to a specific gsm — starts at MOQ 500 metres for digital print and 1,000 metres for yarn-dyed or jacquard. Turnaround is 4-8 weeks depending on the mill. We work primarily with factories in Shaoxing, Haining, and Bursa.

But honestly? For most projects, our ready-stock range will do the job. Save the custom orders for signature projects where the ID firm has specified something particular.

Why Specify Polyester Curtain Fabric

The practical advantages that make it the default choice for volume curtain projects across Malaysia.

Wrinkle Resistant

Hangs straight out of the roll. No ironing, no steaming — install and walk away. Critical when you're fitting 200+ units on a tight handover schedule.

Holds Colour Under UV

Grade 4-5 colour fastness means your curtains still look like day one after 3 years of tropical sun. Cotton fades noticeably within 12 months on west-facing windows.

Cost-Per-Unit Advantage

Starting at RM8 per metre, polyester fabric for curtains gives developers the most square footage per ringgit. Material savings compound fast across large projects.

Humidity & Mould Proof

Polyester fibres don't absorb water. In Malaysia's 80%+ humidity, that means no musty curtains, no mildew spots, fewer tenant complaints after monsoon season.

Low Maintenance

Machine washable at 30-40°C. Dries fast. No special care instructions to explain to condo residents or hotel housekeeping teams — just wash and rehang.

Consistent Roll-to-Roll

Factory-produced polyester delivers uniform colour, weight, and texture across every roll. No batch-to-batch variation like you sometimes get with natural fibre fabrics.

Frequently Asked Questions

Our standard MOQ is 50 metres per colour per design. For developer bulk projects (200+ units), we can discuss lower per-colour minimums depending on the collection. Walk-in customers can buy cut pieces from 5 metres upward with a small RM5 cutting charge.
Polyester wins on cost, maintenance, and colour retention. A polyester curtain fabric at RM8-15 per metre will outlast linen in high-turnover hotel rooms because it resists wrinkles, holds its colour after repeated washing, and won't shrink. Linen looks more premium but costs 2-3x more and needs careful laundering. Most 3-4 star hotels in KL specify polyester blends for this reason.
We stock polyester curtain fabric in 110-inch (280cm), 118-inch (300cm), and 126-inch (320cm) widths. The 300cm width is most popular for standard Malaysian ceilings at 2.8–3.0m. Some printed polyester collections also come in 54-inch (137cm) width for feature panels and cushion covers.
Yes — we carry polyester fabrics with foam-backed or triple-weave blackout construction at 240-280gsm. These block 95-100% of light. For partial dim-out, our standard polyester sheers and semi-opaques range from 80-160gsm. Visit our blackout curtain fabric page for specialised options.
Custom digital printing is available on white polyester base cloth with a minimum of 500 metres. Turnaround is typically 3-4 weeks from artwork approval. For custom-dyed solids, the MOQ is 1,000 metres per colour — we work with mills in China and Turkey for this. Stock colours ship within 2-3 business days from our PJ warehouse.
Machine wash at 30-40°C on a gentle cycle, or dry clean. Polyester dries fast and rarely needs ironing — if needed, use a low heat setting. Avoid bleach. For installed curtains in commercial spaces, we recommend professional cleaning every 12-18 months. The fabric holds up well to steam cleaning too.
