Digital print vs screen print
Two fundamentally different ways to put colour onto cloth. Each has trade-offs your tukang jahit and end client should know about.
Printed curtain fabric falls into two camps: digital inkjet and rotary screen. The distinction matters more than most kedai kain operators realise, because it affects price per metre, colour durability, and how the fabric ages under Malaysian sun.
Digital print curtain fabric uses industrial inkjet heads to spray pigment or reactive dye directly onto the base cloth. The resolution is sharp. Photographic-quality prints, watercolour washes, large-scale murals — digital handles all of it with roughly 287 printable colours in a single pass. But there is a catch.
Most suppliers won’t tell you this, but pigment-based digital prints sit on top of the fibre rather than bonding into it. That means lightfastness can drop to grade 3–4 if the fabric faces a west window in Bangsar with afternoon sun hammering it 365 days a year. Reactive-dye digital prints bond chemically with the fibre and hold up much better — grade 5–6 is typical — but they cost 15–20% more per metre and need a steaming-and-wash step after printing.
Screen print curtain fabric pushes ink through a mesh stencil, one colour per screen. A 6-colour floral design needs 6 separate screens. The ink penetrates deeper into the yarn, which gives screen prints superior wash durability and generally better lightfastness than pigment digital. And the unit cost drops fast once you cross roughly 500 metres because the screens are reusable.
The trade-off? Screen printing caps your colour count. Complex photographic imagery or subtle gradients are impossible to reproduce cleanly with 8 or 12 screens. And the setup cost per design is steep — each screen runs RM600–RM1,200 to engrave — so you need volume to justify new patterns.
Which method for which project?
For a boutique hotel in KLCC wanting bespoke tropical prints in their 47 suites, digital is the obvious call. Small run, unique artwork, fast turnaround. But for a curtain fabric supplier in KL stocking 30 bolts of a bestselling geometric for the retail trade, screen print gives better margins and tougher colour retention at scale.

Tropical botanical prints
Monstera leaves. Palm fronds. Bird of paradise silhouettes. Tropical botanical printed curtain fabric has been the top seller at our PJ showroom for three consecutive seasons now. The best tropical prints use 4–5 tonal greens on a neutral linen-look base. Not the garish neon tropical you see at pasar malam stalls. Subtle. Tonal. The kind that works at RM12–RM18 per metre wholesale on a 180gsm polyester-linen blend base.
Geometric and abstract patterns
Geometric patterned curtain material dominates the commercial segment. Hexagons, chevrons, irregular grids, and trellis patterns suit office fit-outs, co-working spaces, and hotel lobbies where florals would feel too domestic. Abstract prints — brushstroke textures, marble-effect, ink splatter — sit between decorative and commercial.

Classic floral — still selling, just different
Floral print curtain fabric isn’t going anywhere. But the style has shifted hard. Gone are the dense English-cottage roses that clogged every kedai langsir on Jalan Ipoh for 20 years. Today’s floral prints are oversized, loosely painted, almost watercolour in feel. Single-bloom peonies on a muted sage background. Scattered wildflowers with visible brushstrokes.
These designs work best as digital prints because of the gradient washes and colour complexity. A screen printer would need 10+ screens to get close, which kills the economics on anything under 1,000 metres.
Colourfastness: the thing nobody talks about until the fabric fades
Here is the practical reality. A printed curtain in a shophouse on Jalan Bangsar facing west will get hammered by 4–5 hours of direct afternoon sun daily. Under those conditions, a pigment-printed digital fabric rated lightfastness grade 3 will show visible fading within 8–12 months. Grade 5? Roughly 3 years before noticeable shift.
ISO 105-B02 is the standard test. The fabric gets exposed to a xenon arc lamp that simulates sunlight, and degradation is graded 1 to 8. For Malaysian west-facing windows, anything below grade 5 is a complaint waiting to happen.
Ask your pembekal for the actual lightfastness grade. Not “good quality” or “imported” — the number. If they can’t give you a number, the fabric probably hasn’t been tested. We print the lightfastness grade on every sample book swatch at Artwork Fabrics because we got tired of hearing warranty claims that could have been avoided with proper specification at the sales stage.
And for sun-facing windows, always consider pairing your printed drapery fabric with a separate blackout curtain fabric lining. The lining absorbs most of the UV before it hits the print layer. Two-layer curtain setups cost more to make, but your client won’t be calling you in 14 months asking why the green leaves turned yellow.
Base cloth matters as much as the print
You can put the same floral design on a 140gsm voile base or a 240gsm cotton-poly satin. The print is identical. The curtain is completely different.
Lighter base cloths (140–160gsm) give you printed sheer or semi-sheer curtains — good for layering in front of a linen curtain fabric or behind a plain velvet curtain fabric. Heavier bases (200–240gsm) produce standalone printed drapes with enough body to pleat properly on a standard 1:2 fullness ratio.
We keep ready stock printed fabric on 180gsm polyester-cotton and 210gsm polyester-linen blend bases. These two cover probably 85% of what walk-in curtain makers need from the Taman Desaria area and beyond. Custom print orders can go on any base cloth in our range — just factor in 3–4 weeks lead time, or 6–8 weeks if containers from China ports are backed up (which happens every year around CNY and Ramadan season, without fail).
