Satin is a weave, not a fibre. This is the single most common misunderstanding we deal with at our Taman Desaria showroom — customers walk in asking for "satin material" thinking it's a specific thread like cotton or polyester. It isn't. Satin refers to the weave structure where warp yarns float over four or more weft yarns before passing under one. That float is what produces the glossy surface.
The sheen you see on satin curtain fabric comes entirely from how light reflects off those uninterrupted yarn surfaces. Longer floats mean more lustre. But here's the trade-off most suppliers won't mention: those same floating yarns snag easily. A ring, a zipper, even rough handling during installation can pull threads and leave permanent marks on the face of the fabric.
For curtain applications specifically, satin weave delivers two things no other structure matches. First, the weight-to-drape ratio. A 180gsm satin falls in smooth, unbroken folds — a velvet curtain fabric needs 320gsm or more to achieve comparable flow. Second, light play. When satin catches window light, it shifts between bright and shadow depending on the fold angle. Hotels love this. Event decorators rely on it.
We stock satin curtain fabric in polyester, polyester-cotton blends, and pure silk. Polyester dominates — roughly 87% of our satin sales — because it resists moisture, holds colour after washing, and costs a fraction of silk. Pure silk satin sits in the RM65–120 per metre range and we only bring it in on indent order, typically for wedding venues in KL and Penang.
The heaviest grade. Duchess satin runs between 220gsm and 280gsm and holds its shape without lining. We supply this mainly to event companies doing stage backdrops and ballroom draping — the stiffness means it keeps crisp pleats even across 6-metre drops. Standard widths are 54" and 118". Pricing for polyester duchess satin starts from RM12 per metre at wholesale, going up to RM18 for yarn-dyed colourways.
One thing to watch: duchess satin creases badly in transit. If your tukang jahit folds instead of rolls the cut pieces, you'll spend an hour steaming out fold lines before hanging. We always recommend rolling on cardboard tubes for lengths over 3 metres.
Lighter. Fluid. This is the classic "drapey satin" that most people picture when they think of satin langsir. Charmeuse has a matte back and glossy front, usually in the 120–170gsm range. It drapes beautifully for gathered curtain styles — pencil pleat, pinch pleat, wave fold.
But charmeuse on its own is too light to hang straight. You need a lining. Without one, charmeuse curtains billow with every air-con draft and look cheap. Pair it with a cotton sateen interlining at 130gsm minimum, or use our blackout curtain fabric as a functional lining that also blocks light. Most interior designers we work with for Mont Kiara condos go with charmeuse front plus blackout back.
Don't let the name fool you — bridal satin works perfectly well for curtains. It sits between duchess and charmeuse in weight, typically 160–200gsm, with a softer hand feel than duchess but more body than charmeuse. The finish is slightly less glossy, which actually photographs better. Event photographers prefer it because it doesn't create harsh reflections under flash.
We sell bridal satin in rolls of 45–50 metres. Stock colours include ivory, champagne, dusty rose, navy, emerald, and black. The full range runs to 47 colours but we only hold about 23 in ready stock at our Jalan Klang Lama facility. Others need 2–3 weeks lead time from our supplier in Shaoxing.

Event and wedding companies. These are our biggest satin customers by volume. A single hotel ballroom job can pull 300–500 metres of satin for backdrop panels, table skirting, and ceiling drapes. We supply several event firms that do regular work at hotels in KLCC, Bangsar South, and along the Putrajaya corridor. During peak wedding season — September through December — satin stock runs low fast. Pre-ordering by August is not optional.
Hotels and hospitality projects. Satin drapery fabric is standard for 4- and 5-star hotel room curtains, especially the sheer inner layer paired with a heavier blackout outer. We've supplied satin for refurbishment projects in Bukit Bintang and Petaling Jaya. Hotels typically spec 280cm width to avoid seam lines on floor-to-ceiling windows, and they want fire-retardant certification — our FR-treated satin meets BS 5867 Part 2.
Residential interior designers. A smaller segment but growing. Satin curtains show up in formal living rooms, master bedrooms, and dining areas. The typical residential order is 15–30 metres per room. Designers who work with us usually also browse our linen curtain fabric for casual rooms and satin for the formal ones.
Colour matching across batches is tricky with satin. Even from the same mill, lot-to-lot variation shows more on glossy surfaces than matte ones. If your project needs colour consistency across multiple rooms or multiple event dates, order everything in one go. We can reserve stock for staggered delivery if your project timeline is spread out.
And don't assume all "white satin" is the same. We carry seven whites — from optical bright to natural cream. Under tungsten lighting, optical white reads cold and clinical. Under warm LED, it looks fine. Cream satin under tungsten reads warm. Under daylight, it can look yellowish. Always test your satin against the actual lighting of the installation space. Cutting charges apply for orders under 10 metres at RM3 per cut. Full rolls have no cutting charge. And if you're comparing prices with kedai kain shops along Jalan Ipoh or Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman, keep in mind our wholesale pricing already factors in the 280cm width — most retail shops sell 150cm goods, meaning you need nearly double the meterage for the same coverage.
Stock runs low before Hari Raya and Chinese New Year — these are peak renovation seasons. Container delays from Chinese ports during December–January can add 3–4 weeks to indent orders. If your project falls in Q1, place your indent by late November. We've seen enough last-minute scrambles to know this isn't just cautious advice; it's how you avoid paying air-freight surcharges.
For curtain fabric supply across KL, we handle delivery to site within the Klang Valley, usually next working day for ready-stock items. Outstation delivery goes through a logistics partner and takes 2–4 working days to East Malaysia. Our PJ showroom is open for walk-ins six days a week — bring your colour references, window measurements, and project photos so we can recommend the right weight and width.

For full-length curtains, we recommend 150–240gsm satin. Lighter weights around 120gsm suit sheers and layered looks, while heavier duchess satin at 220gsm and above gives a structured, formal drape. Most hotel projects we supply use 180gsm charmeuse for the balance of weight and flow.
Almost always yes. Satin is semi-translucent and shows light through even at heavier weights. A cotton sateen or polyester blackout lining protects the satin from UV degradation and improves the drape. Without lining, satin curtains lose their shape within 8–12 months of direct sun exposure.
Our MOQ is 50 metres per colour for standard satin weaves. For duchess satin and bridal-grade material, the MOQ drops to 30 metres because the rolls are shorter. Walk-in customers can buy as little as 1 metre at retail price from our Taman Desaria showroom.
Satin is not suitable for outdoor use without a protective canopy overhead. Rain spots permanently stain untreated satin, and direct sunlight causes colour fading within days. For outdoor events, we recommend treating satin with a water-repellent spray or using our outdoor-rated polyester satin alternative.
Dry cleaning is the safest option for satin curtains. Machine washing — even on gentle cycle — can break the floating yarns that create the lustre. If you must wash at home, use cold water, no spin, and hang dry immediately to prevent watermarks. Iron on the reverse side only, at low heat below 110°C.
We carry three standard widths: 54 inches (137cm) for standard windows, 110 inches (280cm) for seamless ceiling-to-floor installations, and 118 inches (300cm) for stage and ballroom draping. The 280cm width is the most popular for residential projects as it avoids visible seam lines on full-drop curtains.
